Vertical Gastric Sleeve

The most common bariatric procedure performed. Surgery lasts 40-50 minutes Restricts stomach volume and the amount of food intake by removing 70-85% percent or more of the stomach without bypassing the intestines or preventing the body from fully absorbing nutrients from the gastrointestinal tract.  The result is a new vertical stomach in the form of a sleeve with less storage capacity, which results in eating less.

How the vertical sleeve gastrectomy procedure works

Vertical sleeve gastrectomy decreases stomach volume and the amount of food it can hold by removing 85% or more of the stomach without bypassing the intestines or preventing the body from fully absorbing nutrients from the gastrointestinal tract.

This removed portion of the stomach is responsible for producing ghrelin, the hormone that causes appetite and hunger. By removing this portion of the stomach, rather than leaving it in place, the level of ghrelin is decreased, which causes loss of or a reduction in appetite

Vertical sleeve gastrectomy advantages and disadvantages

As with all surgical procedures, there are advantages and disadvantages. At Sharp, we believe it’s important you are aware of both.

Advantages of vertical sleeve gastrectomy

  • Most common weight loss surgery
  • Dramatically improves health problems related to weight
  • Less time in operating room
  • Requires less anesthesia
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Often allows most foods to be eaten in small amounts
  • Decreases risk of dumping syndrome
  • Reduces stomach volume
  • Appealing option for individuals at a higher risk for the more invasive gastric bypass surgery due to health complications

Disadvantages of vertical sleeve gastrectomy

  • Procedure is not reversible

Please be advised

*If and only if the gallbladder needs to be removed due to gallstones at the time of surgery, that can be performed at a low additional cost of $500 USD. Since this is a rare occurrence, but needs to be addressed if discovered, it is not factored into the price package.

* If and only if a hiatal hernia needs to be repaired during the procedure, that can be performed at a low additional cost of $500 USD.  Since this is a rare occurrence, but needs to be addressed if discovered, it is not factored into the price package.

The Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass

The second most common bariatric procedure performed. It is a procedure that alters the process of digestion, so you feel fuller faster. The surgery is performed through small abdominal incisions, which results in less pain and a quicker recovery.

Surgery lasts 1 to 1.5 hours.   It is a procedure with dual function, as it is restrictive and results in reduced absorption. The result is a new 2-meter bypass with less storage capacity and less absorption time.  Patients should take dietary supplements to maintain a proper nutritional balance.

Are you a candidate for gastric bypass surgery?

Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery may be a good option for you if:

  • You are a man 100 pounds over your ideal body weight or a woman 80 pounds over your ideal body weight
  • You have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40
  • You have a BMI between 35 and 40 and have another condition such as obesity-related Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea or heart disease
How the laparoscopic gastric bypass procedure works

Roux-en-Y laparoscopic gastric bypass is a procedure that alters the process of digestion so you feel fuller faster. The surgery is performed through small abdominal incisions, which results in less pain and a quicker recovery.

During this procedure the surgeon staples the stomach to create a small pouch that will hold less food, and then shapes a portion of the small intestine into a “Y.” The “Y” portion is then connected to the stomach pouch so when food is being digested it travels directly into the lower part of the small intestine. The pouch will hold only about one ounce of food or less, which causes a feeling of fullness after just a few bites.

Advantages and disadvantages of gastric bypass

As with all surgical procedures, there are advantages and disadvantages. At Sharp, we believe it’s important you are aware of both.

Advantages of gastric bypass
  • Decreased hunger hormone (ghrelin)
  • Increased metabolism
  • Lose up to 70 percent of excess weight
  • Reversible

Disadvantages of gastric bypass
  • Risk of blood clots
  • Can cause “dumping syndrome” (food in the stomach moves to the intestines quickly, causing nausea, sweating, fainting, weakness and/or diarrhea)
  • Ulcers

Mini-Bypass/One Anastomosis Bypass (OAGB)

Single anastomosis duodenoileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S)

Revision surgery is for patients who have already undergone a weight loss surgical procedure. Revisions might be needed or desired depending on the situation.

In some cases, during the revision surgery, a complete exploration of the type of bariatric surgery that was performed will be conducted. If the gastric balloon, gastric band, or gastric sleeve procedure was performed previously, a sleeve or bypass would be indicated. If a bypass was previously performed, it is very likely that improvements can be made the bypass.

How the SADI procedure works

There are two steps to the SADI procedure:

  1. Your surgeon performs avertical sleeve gastrectomy to reduce the size of your stomach and the amount of food it can hold.
  2. The lower part of the stomach is then disconnected from the upper part of the small intestine and reconnected to a loop of intestine further down. These changes in anatomy create significant hormonal changes in the body that drastically improve a patient’s metabolism and decrease absorption of fats and calories.
SADI advantages and disadvantages

As with all surgical procedures, there are advantages and disadvantages. At Sharp, we believe it’s important you are aware of both.

Advantages of the SADI procedure
  • Highly effective for long-term weight loss
  • Most beneficial for patients with severe obesity
  • Helpful for patients who’ve gained weight back after a previous sleeve gastrectomy surgery
  • Reduces stomach size
  • Changes hormones that control hunger and feelings of fullness
  • Higher chance of controlling Type 2 diabetes
  • Lower risk of ulcer than other bariatric procedures
  • No dumping syndrome
  • Performed laparoscopically and robotically
Disadvantages of the SADI procedure
  • More complex surgery than other bariatric procedures
  • Must commit to lifelong vitamin replacement and close monitoring by your surgeon
  • Possible worsening of bile reflux
  • Procedure is not reversible
